Three persons have been confirmed dead and four others injured in a lone road traffic crash involving a commercial truck along the Nnobi–Agulu–Awka Road in Anambra State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command, said the accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Friday near St. Jude Catholic Church, Adazi-Ani.
According to the FRSC, the crash involved a Mercedes-Benz 608 commercial truck with registration number XB270NNL. Preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle developed a mechanical fault, caught fire, and the driver subsequently lost control.
The truck reportedly crashed into a roadside barricade, somersaulted and trapped some of its occupants before it became engulfed in flames.
In a statement issued by the Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Margaret B. Onabe, the FRSC said seven male occupants were involved in the crash. Three victims died at the scene, while four others sustained serious injuries.
The statement added that FRSC rescue personnel responded promptly after receiving a distress call at about 10:35 a.m. Officers managed traffic, diverted vehicles to the opposite lane and coordinated the removal of the burnt truck to restore the free flow of traffic.
Reacting to the incident, the Sector Commander, FRSC Anambra State Command, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
She reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to prompt emergency response and effective road safety enforcement, while urging motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles are mechanically roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
Asekhauno also advised drivers against transporting flammable materials under unsafe conditions and stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to prevent mechanical failures and avoidable road crashes.
