Rescue efforts are underway in Sokoto State after a tragic boat accident left more than 40 passengers missing. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that the vessel, carrying over 50 people to Goronyo Market, capsized early in the morning.

According to NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, “About 10 persons have been rescued, while more than 40 passengers remain missing.” She noted that emergency responders, in collaboration with local authorities, have been mobilized to intensify search and rescue operations.

Boat accidents are a recurring tragedy on Nigeria’s waterways, often linked to overcrowding, poor safety regulations, and seasonal flooding.

In August 2024, at least 16 farmers drowned in Sokoto when a canoe capsized on their way to rice fields.

In May 2025, another mishap claimed 27 lives in Gbajibo community, Kwara State — a region that saw 100 deaths from a similar disaster just months earlier.

More recently, in July 2025, six girls drowned in Jigawa State, while 13 people died in Niger State in another incident.

NEMA has assured the public of its continued commitment to rescue operations and support for the families affected.
