Nigeria and Algeria are set to enhance air connectivity with the launch of a new direct flight route linking Algeria, Abuja, and Douala. This development follows a meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, and the Algerian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mezoued Hosine, where they discussed the implementation of a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).
During the discussions, Ambassador Hosine emphasized Algeria’s commitment to expanding air transport links and urged Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to fast-track the necessary approvals to ensure the new route’s launch by April 6, 2025.
Minister Keyamo welcomed the initiative, highlighting its importance in improving regional connectivity and easing travel constraints. He assured the Ambassador of Nigeria’s support, pledging to work closely with relevant agencies to expedite all required formalities.
“This is a long-awaited opportunity,” Keyamo stated. “Currently, traveling to Cameroon requires detours through other countries. A direct Algeria-Abuja-Douala route will enhance accessibility, boost trade, and support economic cooperation.”
The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations, positioning Nigeria as a strategic aviation hub in Africa. The new air service is expected to facilitate business, tourism, and investment opportunities across the region.
