Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, will head the country’s delegation to the highly anticipated 3rd African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Ministerial Meeting, scheduled to take place from 19th to 21st May 2025 in Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this development in an official statement, highlighting the importance of the AU-EUe partnership, which has spanned over two decades. The relationship between Africa and Europe was formally institutionalized at the first AU-EU Summit in Cairo, Egypt, in 2000. Since then, five summits have shaped bilateral cooperation, fostering dialogue and joint action on critical global issues.

According to the ministry, the forthcoming Ministerial Meeting will be preceded by two significant preparatory gatherings: the African Group of Ambassadors’ meeting on 19th May 2025 and the Senior Officials’ session on 20th May 2025.

During the Ministerial plenary, Ambassador Tuggar is slated to deliver an intervention focusing on Peace, Security, and Governance — a pivotal topic amid current global and regional security challenges. His participation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to promoting stability and sustainable governance within the African continent and in its relations with European partners.

This meeting is expected to deepen strategic cooperation between the AU and EU on shared priorities such as trade, security, climate action, digital innovation, and migration management.
