In a landmark achievement for British-Nigerian representation in politics, Princess Opeyemi Bright, a 29-year-old community leader, has been elected as the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom.
Bright officially assumed office on May 16, 2025, as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, a diverse borough in East London. Her election marks a significant milestone for youth leadership and representation within UK local government.
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright has consistently demonstrated a passion for public service. She launched her political career at just 22 years old, serving as a councillor with a focus on youth empowerment, social inclusion, and expanding economic opportunities for residents in her borough.
Leadership clearly runs in her family. Bright follows in the footsteps of her mother, Dr. Afolasade Bright, who served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, a respected senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
Speaking on her historic appointment, Mayor Bright expressed her commitment to advocating for young people, championing diversity, and fostering community cohesion.
This milestone not only celebrates Princess Opeyemi Bright’s personal achievement but also highlights the growing influence of British-Nigerian leaders in UK politics.
