Menstrual Health Crisis:3 in 10 Girls Miss School Due to Periods, PSI Nigeria Intervenes

Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria has introduced the Menstrual Health (MH-NOW) project in Kano State, aiming to tackle the challenges adolescent girls and young women face during their menstrual periods.

The initiative, designed for girls aged 10 to 24, focuses on raising awareness, providing essential menstrual health information, and promoting sustainable hygiene solutions.

Dr. Abdulhamid Adediran, Senior Program Manager and Team Lead on Menstrual Health at PSI Nigeria, emphasized that menstrual health is a crucial aspect of adolescent well-being. He cited research indicating that three out of ten girls miss school during their periods, widening the educational gap between boys and girls.

“To address this challenge, PSI has launched a music video titled ‘Time of the Month’, featuring popular Nollywood and Kannywood actors,” Dr. Abdulhamid stated. The video is designed to break socio-cultural barriers, advocate for menstrual hygiene, and highlight the benefits of reusable pads, proper sanitation, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) practices.

Kano is among six states selected for the MH-NOW project, which seeks to eradicate period poverty, stigma, and other menstrual health challenges.

Dr. Abdulhamid acknowledged the critical role of the media in raising awareness and urged journalists to amplify menstrual health advocacy to ensure that more adolescent girls and young women receive the necessary education and support.
