The Enugu State Government has approved a new wave of infrastructure projects spanning roads, housing, tourism and public facilities as part of its strategy to accelerate economic growth and modernise the state.
The approvals were granted during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting over the weekend, with commissioners saying the projects align with Governor Peter Mbah’s target of expanding the state’s economy from $4 billion to $30 billion within eight years.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, announced that the council had approved the completion and upgrade of the long-abandoned Wings C and D of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex, alongside the rehabilitation of Wings A and B.
He said the unfinished sections of the complex, which have remained abandoned since 2015, would undergo a complete transformation.
“It is going to be a total transformation and remodeling of the Secretariat with modern facilities. We also looked at the challenges we are experiencing at Wings A and B to correct them in Wings C and D,” Okoh said.
He added that repairs to the existing Wings A and B would begin immediately to address structural challenges affecting the buildings.
The council also approved the construction of 1,000 fully detached terrace housing units comprising four- and five-bedroom homes within the New Enugu City development.
According to Okoh, the housing scheme complements the ongoing development of 18,000 mass housing units at Gateway Estate to reduce the state’s housing deficit.
“It is a comprehensive housing development, including the road infrastructure and services such as water and electricity, among others,” he said.
In the transport sector, the government approved the immediate construction of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro-Amachara-Ikpamodo-Okpo-Amaada Road.
The Executive Council also sanctioned flood-control works in Nsukka, including repairs to damaged drainage systems, clearing blocked drains and the construction of five adjoining streets to address recurring flash floods.
Okoh said the government had further approved the procurement of more than 30 pieces of light equipment for the Ministry of Works to strengthen direct labour, emergency interventions and maintenance operations.
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, announced approval for three flagship tourism developments aimed at positioning Enugu as a leading leisure destination.
The projects include the Ovu Lake Golf Resort in Akpawfu, the Akwuke and Attakwu Tourism Development Projects, and the Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car Project.
Madueke said the Ovu Lake Golf Resort would feature an 18-hole championship golf course, a luxury hotel with over 100 rooms, a 600-seat conference centre, boat regatta, sports facilities and landscaped gardens.
She explained that the Attakwu project would develop the area’s natural forest and lake into an ecotourism destination with an animal sanctuary and other attractions, while the Akwuke project would include a modern sand beach, theme park, water park and family recreation centre.
Describing the Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car as one of the administration’s flagship tourism initiatives, Madueke said the facility would stretch 5.32 kilometres from the Cross of Hope on Okpatu Hill to the Awhum Waterfall.
“Rather than climbing the hills on foot, visitors will be able to enjoy a safe, scenic and comfortable cable car ride from the Cross of Hope directly to the Awhum Waterfall, creating a truly unforgettable tourism experience,” she said.
The state government says the projects are expected to improve infrastructure, boost tourism, expand housing access and stimulate economic activity across Enugu.
