Nigeria’s Super Eagles have retained 26th position in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings but slipped to fourth in Africa following Monday’s rankings update.
The Super Eagles, coached by Eric Chelle, have not played since their 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly in June. The result had little impact on their position in the global rankings, with Nigeria maintaining 26th place overall.
However, the three-time African champions lost ground on the continent after Egypt’s impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Pharaohs climbed to third in Africa after reaching the Round of 16, where they were eliminated following a 3-2 defeat to eventual runners-up Argentina.
Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked team after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals and also moved up one place in the global rankings from seventh to sixth.
Senegal retained second place in Africa despite dropping three places worldwide, while Algeria complete the continent’s top five after slipping one place globally.
At the top of the world rankings, newly crowned FIFA World Cup champions Spain reclaimed the No. 1 spot, replacing Argentina, who dropped to second after their defeat in the final. France, England and Brazil complete the global top five.
FIFA is expected to release its next men’s world rankings on October 7, 2026.
