Kano High Court Sentences Two Men to Death for Murder of University Lecturer

A High Court in Kano has sentenced Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya to death by hanging for the murder of a lecturer from Northwest University, Kano.

The convicts both from Kumbotso Local Government Area, were found guilty on a three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Fatima Adamu held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The action of the defendants shows total disregard for human life. I hereby sentence the defendants to five years’ imprisonment each for conspiracy, 10 years’ imprisonment each for robbery without an option of fine. The convicts are hereby sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide. May God have mercy on them,” she held.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the offence occurred on June 11, 2025 at about 3:30 a.m. at Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters.

He said the defendants armed themselves with knives and machetes, robbed the victim of his mobile phone and stabbed him mercilessly in the stomach, thigh and back.

The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered medical reports and photographs as exhibits.

The defendants denied the charges, while their counsel, Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, pleaded for leniency.

The offences contravene Sections 97(1), 298(c) and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
