In a strategic move to enhance international air travel and strengthen diplomatic ties, Nigeria and Canada have signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA). The agreement was formalized in Abuja by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, FICArb (UK), on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Keyamo clarified that the agreement is a code-share arrangement, rather than a full bilateral air services pact. Under this model, multiple airlines can sell seats on the same flights operated by partner carriers, allowing passengers to book flights under different airline codes while ensuring greater connectivity. He noted that Nigeria will designate airline operators to implement the agreement effectively.
Expressing gratitude to Canadian authorities, Keyamo revealed that while Canada had already signed its part of the agreement, finalizing it in Nigeria was a cost-effective decision. He emphasized that this collaboration will further deepen economic and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, commended Keyamo’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s aviation sector. He also welcomed Canadian High Commissioner Pasquale Salvaggio, highlighting that Nigeria holds the strongest economic partnership with Canada in Africa. He asserted that the BASA will yield mutual benefits for both countries.
In response, Salvaggio lauded the Nigerian government for its proactive approach, expressing Canada’s readiness to foster continued cooperation in aviation and other sectors.
