President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, the global Christian community, and millions of faithful worldwide following the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis.

In a solemn tribute, President Tinubu described the late Pontiff as “a humble servant of God, a tireless champion of the poor, and a guiding light for humanity.”

Reflecting on the Pope’s legacy, the President noted that “his passing, coming just after the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, marks a sacred return to his Maker at a time of renewed hope for Christians.”

President Tinubu praised Pope Francis for his unwavering commitment to social justice, compassion for the marginalized, and devotion to peace across global communities. “He stepped onto the world stage in 2013 with a message of mercy, urging humanity to see the face of Christ in the forgotten—the refugees, the migrants, and the poor,” Tinubu recalled.

The President also highlighted the Pope’s enduring advocacy for the developing world, his call for environmental responsibility, and his spiritual leadership in an increasingly complex era. “He reminded us that Earth, our common home, is a sacred gift to be protected for future generations,” he said.

Calling the late Pope “an instrument of peace,” Tinubu commended his efforts to build bridges between faiths and between the rich and the poor. “He embodied Christ’s message of love for God and humanity,” he added.

President Tinubu also reflected on his 2025 Easter message in which he joined the Christian community in offering prayers for the Pope’s recovery. “I was happy to see him deliver the Easter Sunday blessing. Alas, the Lord called him home a day after, and the world lost one of its most powerful voices for justice and climate action,” he lamented.

In closing, Tinubu urged all faithful to honour Pope Francis not just with words, but with meaningful actions: “Let us lift those who are down, heal broken communities, and uphold the dignity of every human being.”

“May God Almighty grant His beloved servant eternal rest,” the President prayed.
