The Enugu State Police Command says it has arrested a 25-year-old suspected armed robber, Chinecherem Ugwuagu, who disguised himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform to evade security checks.

A statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, reveals that the suspect was apprehended on October 11 along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway by officers of the Safer Highway Patrol team.

Ugwuagu was reportedly fleeing on a stolen motorcycle when he was intercepted.

According to the statement, a gun-like object made from a body lotion container wrapped with cloth, a stolen Carter motorcycle, clothes, bank ATM card, and other exhibits were recovered from him”.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had earlier that morning, around 8:00 a.m. and broken into a residence at 9th Mile in Udi Local Government Area. He allegedly used the fake weapon to threaten the occupant before making away with the stolen belongings.

After committing the crime, Ugwuagu changed into an NYSC uniform in an attempt to pose as a corps member and avoid detection at security checkpoints.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, lauded the officers for their swift action and professionalism.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling crime and ensuring public safety, while also urging residents to continue supporting law enforcement efforts.

The statement further indicates that the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
