Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy left his home on Tuesday to begin serving a prison sentence after being convicted of illegally seeking campaign funding from Libya for his 2007 presidential campaign.
According to reports, Sarkozy, who held office from 2007 to 2012, was seen departing hand-in-hand with his wife, singer Carla Bruni, before being driven away in a car flanked by police escorts.
At 69, Sarkozy would become the first former leader of a European Union country to serve time behind bars.
The conviction is linked to long-standing allegations that he accepted millions of euros from the late Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi to finance his campaign, a scandal that has sparked years of legal scrutiny.
