The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, former Vice President and former Prime Minister of the Republic of Angola, describing his death as a significant loss to Angola and the African continent.
In a statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria paid tribute to the late statesman, fondly known as “Nando,” hailing him as a distinguished leader, liberation struggle veteran and a central figure in Angola’s post-independence political evolution.
“Nando was a pivotal figure in shaping modern Angola and steering the country through critical periods of its history,” the statement said, noting that his decades of public service spanned roles as Vice Minister, Minister, Prime Minister, Vice President and President of the National Assembly.
The Nigerian government said it stands in solidarity with the people of Angola at what it described as a moment of profound national loss, acknowledging the late dos Santos as not only a pillar of stability in Angola but also a respected voice within Southern Africa and across the continent.
“His commitment to national unity, reconciliation and development resonates deeply with Nigeria’s own continental aspirations for peace and progress,” the statement added.
On behalf of President **Bola Ahmed Tinubu**, the Government and people of Nigeria extended heartfelt condolences to Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the family of the late statesman and the people of Angola.
Nigeria also prayed for the repose of his soul and for comfort for all who mourn his passing.
