In a bold move to enhance Nigeria’s global air connectivity, the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, FCIArb (UK), has embarked on a strategic working visit to Brazil. This initiative follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to establish a direct air link between Nigeria and South America — a landmark project aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and diplomatic ties.
The Minister, accompanied by the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, and a delegation of Nigerian airline operators, arrived in Brazil late yesterday for a series of high-level meetings.
At the core of the visit is a crucial engagement with global aircraft manufacturer and lessor, Embraer, headquartered in São José dos Campos, São Paulo State. Embraer, a world leader in regional aircraft production, is collaborating with Nigerian aviation stakeholders to explore opportunities for fleet expansion, aircraft leasing solutions, and access to a network of reputable financiers.
“We had productive discussions with Embraer on how they can support Nigeria’s aviation sector through their global partnerships and financial networks,” said Keyamo. “Our objective is to provide Nigerian airline operators with the modern tools and collaborative frameworks they need for sustainable growth and international competitiveness.”
Today, the Honourable Minister will continue his diplomatic mission in Brasilia with a scheduled meeting alongside Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Sílvio Costa Filho. The bilateral talks will focus on reviewing and updating the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Brazil — a pivotal step toward launching direct flights between both nations.
This groundbreaking initiative forms a critical component of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to improve regional air connectivity, enhance international trade opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic presence in South America.
