Wilfred Ndidi has been officially named the new captain of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The 29-year-old midfielder takes over the leadership role following the retirements of former captains William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa.

Ndidi, who also serves as vice-captain at Turkish club Besiktas, was confirmed as captain on Friday after Nigeria’s arrival in Morocco and the team’s first training session.

Addressing the team’s media, Ndidi described the appointment as a major responsibility and revealed that he had already consulted senior players and coaching staff to ensure a smooth transition.

“It’s a huge responsibility,” Ndidi said. “With the support of the players, I believe everything will go smoothly. I’ve spoken with some of the senior players to explain our mission, and we also need the backing of the staff. We are all in this together.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ndidi said the AFCON tournament presents an opportunity for redemption.

“Missing out on the World Cup was painful, but this is another chance to correct our mistakes, put smiles on Nigerians’ faces, and make the country proud again,” he added.

Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles in their opening Group match against Tanzania on December 23.
