The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has emphasized the crucial role of leadership in shaping organizational culture. Speaking at the African Leadership Persons of the Year 2025 event in Casablanca, Morocco, on Friday, March 21, 2025, Prof. Anosike highlighted the importance of leaders serving as role models within their teams.
“Good leaders bring the weather and set the climate within the team by demonstrating self-awareness and fostering positive interactions,” he stated. “Unlike the weather, which changes daily, the organizational climate is a constant experience shaped by leadership.”
Prof. Anosike expressed his gratitude for the support of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, and his dedicated team at NiMet. He also extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading NiMet towards transformation.
Reflecting on NiMet’s legacy, Prof. Anosike underscored the agency’s 130-year history and its pivotal role in sustainable agriculture. “Since 1887, NiMet has been instrumental in providing early warnings and climate-smart solutions to farmers, enabling them to make informed decisions and enhance agricultural productivity,” he noted. He stressed that climate change exacerbates socio-economic challenges, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities.
NiMet, he stated, is committed to multi-hazard monitoring, disaster risk management, and climate risk intelligence. “By delivering impact-based forecasts and early warnings, we aim to foster resilience, strengthen food security, and support safe operations,” he said.
The agency is also partnering with funding organizations and private sector stakeholders to bridge government funding gaps. Prof. Anosike revealed plans to upgrade NiMet’s weather observation networks, enhancing early warning systems and promoting climate-smart economic growth. “A resilient future depends on teamwork, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration. Leadership is not an individual property but an emergent property of the system,” he concluded.
As a recognition of his leadership impact, Prof. Anosike is set to receive the prestigious African Public Sector Leadership Impact Award at the African Leadership Persons of the Year 2025 awards ceremony on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
