The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially launched its Go-Cashless Policy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as part of a nationwide plan to phase out cash payments at all FAAN-managed airports by March 2026.

The move, which aims to enhance transparency, improve user experience, and significantly boost revenue, began on September 29, 2025, with the elimination of cash transactions at revenue points including car parks, access gates, and VIP lounges.

According to FAAN, the policy is expected to increase revenue collection by 50% during the pilot phase, and up to 75–100% growth once fully implemented across key airports like Abuja and Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

New FAAN Contactless Card for Seamless Airport Payments

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku (represented by the Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Adebola Agunbiade) explained that the FAAN Contactless Card will serve as the primary means of payment for services.

“With just a simple tap of the FAAN card, airport users can make secure, instant payments at all designated points,” Kuku said.

She added that the card system:

  • Allows single balance usage across multiple registered cards, ideal for families or business travellers
  • Sends SMS notifications after each transaction
  • Provides a secure online dashboard for balance monitoring and card management
  • Allows users to instantly block lost or stolen cards

A ₦500 one-time, non-refundable activation fee will be deducted upon registration of the card.

Cashless Policy to Drive Transparency, Efficiency, and Global Standards

The Go-Cashless initiative is not only aimed at enhancing convenience for passengers but also ensuring accountability and sustainable revenue growth for the aviation sector.

“This is a response to growing demands for modern, efficient, and world-class airport services,” Agunbiade said.

She emphasized that the digital payment ecosystem will create a traceable financial environment, reduce leakages, and align Nigeria’s airport infrastructure with international aviation standards.

Trained Ambassadors Deployed to Assist Airport Users

To support the rollout, FAAN has deployed trained ambassadors across the Abuja airport to help passengers transition smoothly to the new payment system.
