Real Madrid secured a dramatic 3–2 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday, with Vinícius Júnior scoring twice to keep Los Blancos within touching distance of La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Following Barcelona’s narrow 1–0 win over Rayo Vallecano earlier in the day, Madrid ensured the gap at the top remained four points with a hard-fought win at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Atletico opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Ademola Lookman, who finished off a clever backheel assist from Giuliano Simeone.
Real Madrid responded strongly after the break. Vinícius equalised from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after Brahim Díaz was brought down in the box. Just three minutes later, Federico Valverde put the hosts ahead, intercepting a pass from José Giménez before firing home with the outside of his boot.
Atletico fought back, with Nahuel Molina levelling the score with a stunning long-range strike into the top corner.
However, Vinícius restored Madrid’s lead after being set up by Trent Alexander-Arnold, curling home his second goal of the match. The Brazilian forward has now scored 10 goals in his last 11 appearances across all competitions.
Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, deputising for the injured Thibaut Courtois, played a key role, making several important saves, including a late stop from Alexander Sørloth.
Madrid were reduced to 10 men late in the game when Valverde was sent off for a challenge on Álex Baena, but they held on to secure all three points.
Manager Álvaro Arbeloa celebrated his first Madrid derby win since taking charge in January, capping off a successful week that also saw his side eliminate Manchester City from the UEFA Champions League.
The victory keeps Real Madrid firmly in the La Liga title race as they continue their pursuit of Barcelona.
