Manchester City continued their late-season surge in the Premier League with a convincing victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday, a result that sent Pep Guardiola’s side to the top of the table and confirmed Burnley’s relegation.

City, now unbeaten in 11 matches, have dramatically closed a nine-point gap on Arsenal in under two weeks, moving into first place on goal difference with five games remaining. It is the first time since the opening week of the season that Guardiola’s team have led the standings.

The visitors made a flying start, with Erling Harland opening the scoring just five minutes in. He collected a precise pass from Jérémy Doku and calmly chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to give City early control.

City created several chances to extend their lead before halftime. Rayan Cherki saw a powerful effort tipped onto the crossbar, while Nico O’Reilly was denied from close range. Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka produced a string of impressive saves to keep the scoreline down.

Burnley also threatened in attack as they fought to avoid relegation. Jaidon Anthony forced a sharp save with a curling effort, and Zian Flemming missed a good opportunity from inside the box.

In the second half, City continued to press for a second goal, with Haaland striking the post and Rayan Aït-Nouri firing over after a well-worked move. Despite Burnley’s resilience, the result sealed their return to the Championship after just one season back in the top flight, marking their second relegation in three years.

For City, the win strengthens their position in a tightly contested title race and maintains their momentum as they push to retain the Premier League crown.
