Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has confirmed the killing of six operatives of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG), also known as Askarawa, along with four vigilantes in an ambush by armed bandits in Anka Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday, followed a successful joint security operation led by the Nigerian Army against bandits in the Sunke forest. Security forces had raided the camp, eliminating several bandits and seizing a significant cache of weapons.
However, as the security personnel were returning, they were ambushed by bandits in Bagega, resulting in the tragic deaths of the ten operatives. Governor Lawal disclosed that three others—two security officers and one vigilante—remain missing.
In response, the governor ordered immediate medical attention for the injured and pledged support for the families of the deceased.
“On behalf of the Zamfara State Government, I pray that Allah accepts the martyrdom of these brave individuals who sacrificed their lives to protect their people,” Lawal stated.
The Zamfara State Community Protection Guards, established under Governor Lawal’s administration, were formed to bolster the fight against escalating insecurity in the region. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to ending banditry and restoring peace in Zamfara and across Nigeria.
