Deputy Speaker Awards Full Scholarships to Orphaned Twins, Inspires Millions in Donations

In a heartwarming act of generosity, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has awarded full educational scholarships to 12-year-old orphaned twins, Chidera Emmanuela Maduka and Chimankpa Emmanuel Maduka, covering their studies from primary school through university.

Kalu announced the scholarship during a visit to Infant Jesus Orphanage in Calabar as part of activities marking the 37th convocation and 50th anniversary celebrations of his alma mater, the University of Calabar, where he delivered the convocation lecture.

Moved by the aspirations of the twins—who expressed their desire to study law—the Deputy Speaker pledged to support their education, ensuring they have the resources to achieve their dreams.

In addition to the scholarships, Kalu donated N2 million in cash and essential food supplies to the orphanage. His generosity inspired further contributions, with accompanying members of the House of Representatives donating N1 million. His former classmates from the Faculty of Law, Class of ’98, contributed N300,000, while Anambra APC chieftain, Mr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, added N200,000. The Peace in South East Project (PISE-P) also supported the cause with N500,000, bringing the total donations to N4 million.

Speaking after the visit, Kalu emphasized that his intervention aimed not just at providing immediate relief but ensuring long-term sustainability for the orphans.

“This visit is not just about giving them something to eat today and leaving them with nothing tomorrow. We are putting a structure in place to secure their future,” he stated.

Expressing her gratitude, the coordinator of the orphanage, Sister Chinyere Chukwuka, lauded Kalu and his team for their generosity, offering prayers for continued blessings upon them.
