For the first time in twelve years, the Children’s Parliament in Ondo State has been revived, as the present administration under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa takes decisive steps to empower young voices and promote child rights.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Dr. Seun Osamaye, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Ondo State House of Assembly, accompanied by young parliamentarians, their parents, officials from the Ministry of Women Affairs, and representatives of Save the Children International.
Dr. Osamaye described the return of the Children’s Parliament as a demonstration of the state government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of children and ensuring their participation in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
“This initiative provides a vital platform for our children to advocate for their rights and actively contribute to policies on education, health, and child protection,” she said.
Also speaking during the visit, Mr. Samuel Eyimofe, Communications Officer for Save the Children International in Ondo and Cross River States, revealed ongoing efforts in cocoa-producing communities aimed at combating child labour. He urged government at all levels to prioritize children’s participation in governance and increase investments in the education sector as a means of driving sustainable development.
Eyimofe also called for continuous support and recognition of the Children’s Parliament, describing it as an essential advocacy tool for promoting child welfare and inclusivity in governance.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, expressed excitement at hosting the young parliamentarians. He assured them of the 10th Assembly’s readiness to provide legislative and budgetary support to sustain the initiative.
“The Children’s Parliament is a commendable step towards fostering inclusiveness and protecting the rights of our children,” Oladiji noted.
Some of the children, speaking during an interview, shared their excitement about witnessing the legislative process firsthand, describing it as an inspiring and educational experience.
The official inauguration of the 3rd Ondo State Children’s Parliament has been scheduled for May 29, 2025, with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa expected to preside over the event.
