Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election.

Atiku made the announcement on Monday via a post on X, where he shared photos of himself receiving his ADC membership card and holding a customised “Waziri 01” jersey.

The registration event, held in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, attracted a large turnout of supporters, party officials and community leaders. In the released images, Atiku is seen lifting his membership form as excited supporters captured the moment on their mobile phones.

“It’s official. – AA,” he wrote, confirming rumours of his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had long been a central figure.

His defection follows earlier reports indicating that he would conclude his ADC registration during his birthday visit to Adamawa, which also included community outreach activities.

Atiku stepped away from the PDP earlier in 2025 and is now expected to begin consolidating support to build a formidable opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 elections, setting up a potential showdown with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
