The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to make public the earnings of political office holders before embarking on a planned upward review of their remuneration.

In a statement issued by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NLC described the proposed review as “inequitable and unjust,” warning that it would further widen the gap between civil servants and politicians.

Ajaero noted that the review comes at a time when workers are facing salary freezes, delayed promotions, and harsh economic realities worsened by tariff hikes.

“Making public office a sanctuary for wealth-making instead of service and sacrifice will only heighten desperation for political positions, with dangerous consequences for our democracy,” he cautioned.

The labour leader further criticized the uniformity of political salaries across the federation, pointing out that while civil service pay structures differ from state to state, political office holders earn the same nationwide.

“It is unjust that a councillor in Yobe State receives the same pay as a councillor in Rivers State, while civil servants face uneven wage structures,” Ajaero said.

He stressed that while fair remuneration for all categories of workers is necessary, it must be applied equitably and not in a discriminatory manner that violates constitutional principles.

The NLC therefore urged RMAFC to suspend the exercise until transparency and fairness are guaranteed.
