Two teenagers were killed and three others wounded on Thursday after gunmen opened fire outside a school in Sobral, a town in the northeastern state of Ceará, authorities confirmed.

According to a statement from the Ceará state government, the attackers shot into the school’s parking lot from the sidewalk before fleeing the scene. Police said the suspects were on motorcycles.

“During the incident, a certain amount of drugs, a precision scale, and packaging were seized from one of the victims,” the statement added, suggesting possible links to drug activity.

Ceará Governor Elmano de Freitas condemned the attack, calling it “intolerable.” Writing on X (formerly Twitter), he said:

“I express my deep sorrow at the lives lost to this intolerable violence. I have ordered a boost in police operations across the region to capture the criminals.”

The shooting comes amid a rise in violent clashes tied to drug trafficking gangs, which have been expanding rapidly in Brazil’s poor northeastern states. Rivalries between criminal groups have increasingly spilled into public spaces, raising fears of further attacks.

Authorities have launched an intensive search operation in Sobral and surrounding areas to track down those responsible.
