Nollywood superstar Funke Akindele has been celebrated by the Federal Government for her record-breaking film, Behind the Scenes, which recently crossed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office. The milestone makes it the first Nollywood movie to surpass the ₦2 billion mark.

In a statement shared on its X handle, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) described Akindele’s achievement as a “major boost for Nigeria’s creative industry” and a sign of the global rise of Nigerian storytelling.

“Behind the Scenes has officially crossed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, making history as the first Nollywood film ever to hit the ₦2 billion mark,” the agency said. “The flex did not stop at home; the movie also showed modest global muscle, raking in over $111,256 in Canada and an impressive $190,249 across North America. From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas — this movie had everyone locked in.”

The NOA further highlighted Akindele’s exceptional track record, noting that she is the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years.

“The success of Behind the Scenes demonstrates the expanding reach of Nigeria’s film industry and reinforces the global appeal of Nollywood productions,” the agency added. “It is a proud moment for the country’s cultural and creative sectors.”

The government’s commendation comes as the movie continues to earn widespread acclaim, dominating both local and international markets and cementing Akindele’s place in African cinema history.
