In a bid to enhance the profitability and sustainability of fish farming in Kwara State, over twenty local fish farmers have received specialized training on best practices in aquaculture. The capacity-building workshop, held in Ilorin, the state capital, was organized by the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), a non-governmental organization committed to promoting food security and economic growth through agriculture.
During the training, facilitators Mr. John Domozoro and Mr. Sofolabi Sofela emphasized the immense opportunities available in Nigeria’s aquaculture industry. They highlighted that Nigeria currently holds the position of the second-largest producer of fish in Africa, underscoring fish farming as a viable and lucrative means of livelihood.
Mr. Domozoro noted that Kwara State possesses vast untapped potential in aquaculture, urging local farmers to adopt modern fish farming techniques to maximize profit and improve production standards.
One of the participants, Alhaji Kamaldeen Alasinrin, described the training as an invaluable eye-opener. He expressed gratitude to the facilitators for equipping farmers with practical knowledge and appealed to the Kwara State Government to support fish farmers with solar-powered water pumps to ease operational challenges and reduce costs.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Association of Fish Farmers in Kwara State, Alhaji Nurudeen Tijani, highlighted the importance of continuous capacity building for business success. He commended WISHH for the initiative and reiterated the need for government interventions to empower the growing number of fish farmers in the state.
Participants collectively called on the government to provide necessary infrastructure and support to help Nigeria maintain its standing as one of Africa’s top fish producers.
