“She called me before the elections. I didn’t know her, but I prayed for her as a female leader. God answered those prayers. Her work in healthcare speaks for itself. I am thankful she became Chairman and is fulfilling her duties with humanity,” he added.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has marked a historic milestone under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike with the successful facilitation of free eye checks for members including surgery for former Council Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, at Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja.

The surgery, conducted on August 28, 2025, ended Sule’s long battle with visual impairment, restoring clarity to his sight after years of difficulty.

Expressing his gratitude, Comrade Sule described the intervention as an act of compassion and true leadership.

“By December 22, it would be seven years since my struggle began. I thank them for spending resources to help me. I remain deeply grateful to the NUJ-FCT Council for their support,”he said.

Sule, overwhelmed with emotion, praised the Grace Ike-led executive for prioritizing journalist welfare.

“She called me before the elections. I didn’t know her, but I prayed for her as a female leader. God answered those prayers. Her work in healthcare speaks for itself. I am thankful she became Chairman and is fulfilling her duties with humanity,” he added.

In line with her campaign pledge to place members’ welfare at the forefront, NUJ FCT has also scheduled two more journalists, Mr. Nicholas Ngozichukwu of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Mr. Kamoru Odunlami of ITV, for similar free eye surgeries at Nizamiye Hospital following medical evaluations.

Others who were screened but deemed unfit for immediate surgery received medications and follow-up care until they become eligible for the procedure.

The initiative, which has drawn commendation from beneficiaries, is part of a broader health-focused agenda by the Grace Ike administration, made possible through a strategic partnership with Nizamiye Hospital.

Journalists in the FCT say the move is a first of its kind in recent years, reflecting the union’s renewed commitment to healthcare and the welfare of its members.
