The South-East Senate Caucus has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to immortalize the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu by naming the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after him.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, members of the caucus described Nwosu as a democratic hero who presided over what is widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest election in 1993. The caucus lamented that despite his contributions, he has yet to receive official recognition from the government.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, speaking on behalf of the caucus, disclosed that a motion was presented in the Senate to honor Nwosu in three ways: naming the INEC headquarters after him, bestowing a posthumous national honor, and observing a minute of silence in his memory. However, only the last request was approved.
“We are not deterred. It may be delayed, but it will not be denied,” Abaribe stated,j expressing confidence that a future government will eventually honor Nwosu, just as Chief MKO Abiola and June 12 were recognized after years of neglect.
Adding to the discussion, Senator Osita Izunaso highlighted Nwosu’s determination to conduct the 1993 election despite opposition, including a court ruling that sought to halt the process. He recalled how Nwosu defied pressure, ensured voting proceeded, and continued announcing results until he was arrested.
The caucus urged President Tinubu to take decisive action and recognize Nwosu’s legacy. “The Senate’s resolution is advisory, not binding, but we believe the right thing should be done. Humphrey Nwosu’s courage and dedication to democracy deserve national acknowledgment,” Izunaso stressed.
