Liverpool’s flawless start to the Premier League season came crashing down on Saturday as Crystal Palace sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park, leaving the Eagles as the only unbeaten team in the league.
Palace extended their club-record unbeaten run to 18 matches across all competitions, including three against Liverpool, with Eddie Nketiah’s stoppage-time strike proving decisive.
The FA Cup holders punished Liverpool’s sloppy defending early on when Ismaila Sarr pounced from close range after the visitors failed to clear a corner.
Liverpool looked out of sorts for most of the contest, but nearly rescued a point late when Federico Chiesa swept home an equaliser in the 87th minute, raising hopes of another comeback.
This time, it was Palace who had the final say. With virtually the last kick of the game, Nketiah coolly slotted past Alisson in a crowded box, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.
“It was a massive result for us. Beating a team like Liverpool shows how far we’ve come,” Nketiah told club media after the game.
The win lifted Palace to second in the Premier League, just three points behind Liverpool at the top.
Arsenal, who face Newcastle on Sunday, can reclaim second place and close the gap on Liverpool to just two points, keeping the early-season title race wide open.
