The Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria has hosted the first West African screening of the Ukrainian film “Bucha,” a powerful cinematic account of resilience amid the horrors of war. The event, held in Lagos, also served as a platform to strengthen Ukraine–Africa relations and raise funds for humanitarian relief through a charity project titled “Allies of Steel.”

Welcoming guests, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria described the film as both a remembrance and a call to action. He expressed gratitude to the event’s sponsor, Ukrainian company WELTUM-Zaporizhzhia, for supporting the initiative aimed at promoting Ukraine-Africa dialogue through art and truth-telling.

“Today marks a special moment — the film ‘Bucha’ will be screened for the first time in West Africa. It is a real-life story about a small Ukrainian town that became a symbol of mass murder and brutality — the true face of the Russian army,” he said.

“But it is also a story about resilience, humanity, and hope in the face of horror,” he added.

The ambassador emphasized that Russia’s aggression in Ukraine reflects broader neo-imperialistic tendencies that threaten global peace, including in Africa.

“The same forces that bring violence and disinformation to Ukraine also destabilize parts of Africa. That is why it is so important to show the continent the true face of Russian neo-colonialism,” he noted.

The evening also featured a charity fundraising drive for “Allies of Steel” — an initiative that develops ground robots used to evacuate wounded soldiers, deliver supplies, and clear mines in active combat zones.

“Every dollar counts. These machines are saving lives every day, and even a small contribution can help protect a Ukrainian defender,” he said, adding that each donor would receive a symbolic token of friendship between Ukraine and Africa.

In his remarks, the newly appointed Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Lagos, Michel Fadi Issa, reaffirmed the need for global solidarity and the defense of freedom.

“We gather not only to express our solidarity with Ukraine but to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, justice, and sovereignty,” Issa said.

“Ukraine’s story is one of courage and resilience. Its people have stood firm in defense of democracy and liberty — values that must never be taken for granted,” he added.

He urged Nigerians and the international community to continue supporting efforts that uphold human rights and sovereignty, concluding with a message of hope and unity.

“May the courage of the Ukrainian people inspire us all to work together with compassion and wisdom toward lasting peace. Glory to Ukraine!”

The event ended with applause and reflection as guests praised the film for its emotional depth and realism, calling it a moving reminder of the cost of war and the power of human endurance.
