The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Hon. Bello El-Rufai, has called for urgent reforms to improve the welfare of Nigeria’s security personnel, stressing that recruitment alone cannot address the nation’s security challenges.
Speaking during a legislative session on Thursday, El-Rufai said police officers and soldiers require stronger motivation and support to perform effectively. He urged the federal government to implement an immediate upward review of their basic salaries and welfare packages.
“In addition to recruitment, there is a need for us to immediately increase the basic salary and welfare of police officers and soldiers, and we must find the money to do that,” he stated.
The lawmaker pressed government agencies to prioritize adequate funding for security sector reforms.
According to him, improved remuneration would boost morale, reduce susceptibility to corruption, and strengthen Nigeria’s broader security architecture.
