Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Remmy Njoku has stirred widespread reactions online after declaring that there is no such thing as an “independent woman,” insisting that no human truly wants to go through life alone.
The ROK Studios boss shared her thoughts in an Instagram post where she argued that many women become “independent” not by choice, but out of necessity.

According to Njoku, independence often develops when people lack reliable support systems around them.
“There’s really no such thing as an independent woman,” the actress wrote. “No one genuinely wants to do life alone. Women usually become independent because they don’t have dependable people to lean on.”
She further explained that emotional and practical support are basic human needs, adding that strength is often born from circumstance rather than preference.
“Most times, independence is survival. It’s what happens when you realise you have no choice but to show up for yourself,” she added.
Njoku’s post quickly sparked conversations across social media, with fans and followers sharing mixed reactions. While some agreed with her perspective, others argued that independence can also be a deliberate and empowering personal choice.
The mother of three, who has been vocal about relationships, mental health and womanhood in the past, is known for using her platform to challenge societal norms and encourage honest discussions.
Her latest comments have once again placed her at the centre of public discourse, reigniting debates about modern womanhood, self-reliance and emotional support.
