The national leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has appointed a three-member Caretaker Committee to oversee the affairs of its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter for a period of three months.
According to an official letter signed by SWAN Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, the committee comprises Mr. Edwin Akwueh as Chairman, Ms. Tamara Ebiwei as Secretary, and Mr. Linus T. Hagher as Member.
The appointment followed the dissolution of the chapter’s executive committee by the FCT Congress on June 19, 2026, a decision that was communicated to the SWAN National Secretariat on June 23.
Part of the letter, titled “Appointment of Caretaker Committee for SWAN FCT Chapter,” stated that the National Executive Committee (NEC), led by SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin, approved the constitution of the committee to manage the affairs of the chapter pending the election of a substantive executive.
The letter noted that the caretaker committee would serve for three months and work alongside the SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO), established by Congress, to conduct elections for a new executive committee.
“Within this period, it is expected that the Caretaker Committee, alongside the Congress-set up SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO), will conduct election to elect a substantive Executive Committee for the chapter,” the statement read.
The appointment took immediate effect, with the former executive committee directed to hand over all association property in its possession to the caretaker committee.
In a separate communication addressed to the immediate past Chairman of the FCT Chapter, Mr. Kelechi Onwudiwe, the national leadership said the directive was necessary to ensure the uninterrupted administration of the association’s activities.
“This is to ensure continuous smooth running of the Association’s activities without any hindrance whatsoever,” the letter stated.
SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin also commended Onwudiwe and members of the dissolved executive committee for their contributions to the growth of the association and wished them success in their future endeavours.
He further charged the newly appointed caretaker committee to deploy their experience and expertise in advancing the objectives of the association while preparing the ground for a smooth transition to an elected executive.
