The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Independence Day parade, which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 1, as part of the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

The announcement was made in an official statement released on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary,” the statement read.
“The government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”

Public Holiday Still Holds, Other Events Unaffected

While the Independence Day parade has been cancelled, the public holiday declared for Wednesday, October 1, remains in effect, and other scheduled activities under the “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation” theme will proceed as planned.

The Federal Government also extended its apologies for any inconvenience caused by the last-minute cancellation and thanked Nigerians and the international community for their understanding and suppor

Although no official reason was provided for the cancellation, the decision aligns with what appears to be a more subdued approach to this year’s national celebrations, possibly reflecting the government’s focus on economic reforms and national stability.

“The government urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” the statement concluded.
