Japan’s Takumi Minamino was the hero on Saturday as Monaco stunned defending champions Paris Saint-Germain with a 1–0 victory in Ligue 1.
The former Liverpool forward scored just after the midway point of the second half at the Stade Louis II, handing PSG only their second league defeat of the season.
Despite being reduced to 10 men after ex-PSG defender Thilo Kehrer was sent off in the 80th minute, Monaco held firm through seven minutes of stoppage time to secure the upset.
The win ends Monaco’s run of three consecutive Ligue 1 defeats and lifts them provisionally to sixth place, seven points behind PSG.
PSG, who remain top of the table with 30 points from 14 matches, are now at risk of losing their spot at the summit, with Marseille and Lens both capable of overtaking them depending on this weekend’s results.
Minamino broke the deadlock by controlling an Aleksandr Golovin cross before finishing past Lucas Chevalier. The principality side maintained their lead even after Kehrer’s red card was confirmed via VAR for a foul on Ibrahim Mbaye.
Paul Pogba made a brief appearance off the bench for Monaco, continuing his gradual return to competitive football following a long spell out due to a doping ban.
PSG, fresh from a 5–3 Champions League win over Tottenham, were missing key players including Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes and Désiré Doué. Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé featured for just over half an hour but was unable to change the outcome as PSG recorded their second league loss of the campaign.
