Internationally acclaimed boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a fatal road accident in the Makun area of Ogun State, along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of two persons.

The crash reportedly involved an SUV conveying the former heavyweight champion and a stationary truck, sparking widespread concern after a video circulated online showing Joshua being rescued from the mangled vehicle.

Although the full circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially confirmed the crash.

In a statement signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC said the accident involved two vehicles.

“The incident involved two vehicles: a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN (private) and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck with unknown registration number,” the statement read.

According to the FRSC, five adult males were involved in the crash.

“Two persons sadly lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries,” the Corps said.

The injured victim was immediately evacuated to a medical facility for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were taken to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu.

The FRSC further disclosed that the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) had been notified to conduct further investigations and complete necessary documentation.

Preliminary findings by the Corps suggested that the Lexus SUV was travelling at excessive speed and may have lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre before crashing into the stationary truck, which was reportedly properly parked by the roadside.

“The primary causes of the crash—excessive speed and wrongful overtaking—constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the FRSC noted.

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a quick recovery.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish the injured victim, Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery,” Mohammed said.

The FRSC also renewed its call on motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking, speeding, and disregard for traffic rules, especially on high-speed corridors like the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

“Motorists must exercise patience, maintain lane discipline, and prioritise safety over haste, particularly during the festive travel period,” the Corps advised.

As of press time, Ogun State authorities are yet to issue an official statement, while further details regarding the deceased victims remain unclear.
