Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving several residents feared dead and many others injured, according to local sources.

The assailants reportedly stormed the community without warning, firing sporadically and causing panic among residents, who fled their homes for neighbouring villages and nearby bushes to escape the violence.

Residents described the incident as the worst attack the area has witnessed in many years.

“The community is traumatized. We have not experienced this level of violence in a long time,” a resident told this reporter.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties remained unclear, as residents scattered in different directions during the attack, making it difficult to immediately assess the scale of fatalities and injuries.

Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the attack had occurred and that security operatives had been deployed to the area.

“We have been informed of the attack, and the command has deployed a tactical team to the area to get the real information of what happened and the number of victims,” Usman said.

He added that police officers were currently assessing the situation to determine the extent of damage and casualties, noting that a detailed official statement would be released in due course.

Some residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that security agencies had begun moving into the affected community to restore calm and reassure displaced residents.

Meanwhile, worried locals have appealed to the Kebbi State Government and security agencies for urgent intervention, describing the attack as deadly and devastating to the largely peaceful community.

Efforts to reach the village head for comments were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone were not answered at the time of reporting.
