Popular Lagos socialite and businessman, Emeka Okonkwo, better known as E-Money, was released on Tuesday evening after hours of questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged abuse of the Naira and defacement of foreignj currencies.
E-Money was reportedly arrested on Monday night at his residence in the Omole area of Lagos and subsequently taken to the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja for interrogation. According to sources within the anti-graft agency, the arrest was linked to allegations that the socialite sprayed United States dollars at a public event — a violation of the country’s Foreign Exchange Act.
Confirming his release via his Instagram handle, @iam_emoney1, E-Money reassured his followers, posting a video with the caption: “No tension, everywhere good, I see all your love and support. God bless you all.” The video, which showed him seated regally in his residence, featured the gospel tune, “Thank you for saving me, thank you my Lord,” playing in the background.
Fellow celebrity socialite and nightlife entrepreneur, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, also took to social media to celebrate E-Money’s release. Posting via his Instagram handleb @Cubana_ChiefPriest, he wrote: “My brother don fall out, To God be the glory.”
An EFCC source had earlier confirmed the arrest, stating: “On Monday night, we arrested E-Money for Naira abuse and defacing foreign currencies. Preliminary investigations are ongoing, and he will be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries.”
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for an official statement were unsuccessful.
