Gunmen who attacked a Christ Apostolic Church parish in Ekiti State have demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion for the release of worshippers abducted during the incident.

The attack occurred in Eda Oniyo, in Ilejemeje Local Government Area, where residents remain gripped by fear following the violent invasion.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the church during a revival programme, shooting sporadically for over 30 minutes before abducting 15 worshippers and fleeing into a nearby forest.

The incident also claimed the life of a visiting pastor, further deepening the community’s grief as families of the victims await updates on rescue efforts.

Community leaders have since called for urgent reinforcement of security in the area, warning that the increasing spate of attacks has left residents vulnerable.

They also urged the Ekiti State Government to temporarily suspend evening programmes and other late-night gatherings to prevent further incidents.

Responding to the development, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, visited the community and ordered the immediate deployment of a joint security team, including police officers, military personnel, and other operatives, to commence coordinated bush-combing operations.

“We will do everything within our capacity to ensure those kidnapped are rescued alive and reunited with their families,” Falade assured during his visit.

The traditional ruler of the community, the Eleda of Eda Oniyo, Oba Julius Oladipo Owodola, condemned the attack, describing it as both unfortunate and disturbing.

“This is a painful incident for our people. We appeal to both the state and federal governments to urgently strengthen security in our community and its environs,” the monarch said.

As of the time of filing this report, security operations are ongoing, with no official confirmation on any breakthrough in negotiations or the release of the abducted victims.
