The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman over the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision follows the outcome of a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which investigated the incident alongside other internal disciplinary procedures.
Addressing an emergency press conference in Abuja, Disu disclosed that the officer, along with members of his team, has been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.
The police panel found that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
“The disciplinary committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman, as well as other officers found culpable in the incident,” the IGP said.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” he added.
Disu confirmed that he has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
Reiterating the Force’s stance, the IGP stressed a zero-tolerance policy for extrajudicial actions and abuse of power.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he said.
The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that the matter would be handled with utmost seriousness.
“We are fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability,” Disu stated.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi has sparked widespread outrage online. According to police authorities, the incident occurred earlier this month when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”
