FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Vows Justice Over Death of Arise News Reporter Somtochukwu Maduagwu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Arise News journalist, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, and has vowed that the circumstances surrounding her untimely demise will be thoroughly investigated.

In a statement issued Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the Minister said that justice will be served and those responsible will be held accountable.

“The death of Somtochukwu is not only a loss to Arise News but also a painful blow to the Nigerian media and the nation at large,” Wike stated.

Somtochukwu Was Brought In Dead, FCTA Confirms

The Minister cited information from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Mandate Secretary for Health, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, revealing that Somtochukwu was brought in dead to Maitama Hospital at around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, September 29.

While details remain under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that the journalist may have been the victim of a violent attack at her residence in Katampe, a district in Abuja.

FCT Minister Pledges Full Support for Police Investigation

Wike emphasized the seriousness with which the FCT Administration views the case and expressed confidence in the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough investigation.

“We will not rest until the truth is uncovered. The Police will ensure those behind this crime face the full weight of the law,” he assured.

The Minister also extended his condolences to the management and staff of Arise News, describing the late journalist as a young woman whose promise and professionalism were evident in her work.

Meanwhle, media stakeholders, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, have demanded swift justice and enhanced protection for journalists.
