Operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Yobe State Command, have rescued 21 children, aged between seven and 15, from suspected human traffickers while attempting to transport them to the Niger Republic.

According to a statement by the State Comptroller, SS Jega, the interception occurred at the Geidam Control Post in Dunari, Yobe State. The children, who could not provide details of their intended destination, were reportedly being trafficked from Labule and Ibeto towns in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State to Maine Soroa in Niger Republic.

The statement revealed that a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number 10B-87GM (Gombe State) was intercepted by immigration officers. Among those arrested was 28-year-old Abubakar Saidu, who claimed to be an Islamic teacher and the guardian of the minors. He was taken into custody along with other suspected accomplices.

Jega confirmed that the Comptroller General of Immigration, KN Nandap, had directed that the suspects be handed over to the appropriate government agency for further investigation and legal action.

“The CG has put all necessary machinery in place to secure our borders and prevent future occurrences of such illegal activities,” the statement concluded.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring the safety of vulnerable children.
