Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has pledged to make the office of the Vice President an active partner in governance rather than a ceremonial position if elected.
Obi made the declaration on Saturday while accepting his affirmation as the party’s presidential candidate and formally announcing Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement posted on his X account, Obi promised to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
According to him, adherence to the rule of law would be mandatory for both public office holders and citizens in line with constitutional provisions.
“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike, strictly in accordance with our constitutional frameworks,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor also pledged to deepen democracy by promoting inclusive governance and respecting the role of opposition parties.
“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party. Instead, we will institutionalise deep respect for opposition parties and foster constructive engagement in governance.
“Under my leadership, democracy will be pursued with integrity, fairness and transparency,” he added.
Speaking on the role of his running mate, Obi said the Vice President under his administration would play a meaningful and substantive role in governance.
“I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre. I hereby accept my affirmation and nominate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as my Vice President,” he said.
Obi expressed confidence that the partnership would advance his vision of national renewal, improved governance and economic transformation.
