Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The announcement was made on Tuesday at Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, where Obi described his move as the beginning of a “rescue journey” ahead of Nigeria’s next political cycle and the 2027 general election.

Obi said the decision to align with the ADC was aimed at confronting entrenched political interests and resisting electoral malpractice through lawful means. He noted that the coalition represents a platform for reform and credible opposition politics in the country.

The event was attended by members of the Obidient movement and allied political figures, many of whom openly endorsed Obi’s decision, signaling a broader opposition realignment around the ADC.

Enugu was selected as the venue due to its symbolic importance in the South-East, underscoring the region’s relevance in national politics. The ADC, which already enjoys the backing of several opposition leaders, has recorded increased political activity and growing membership ahead of the 2027 elections.

Reactions to Obi’s defection have been divided. While many supporters have welcomed the move, Abia State Governor and Labour Party member, Alex Otti, confirmed that Obi informed him of the decision but stated that he would remain in the LP.

Critics, however, argue that Obi’s exit could weaken the Labour Party’s influence and have raised concerns about the ability of the ADC-led coalition to maintain unity among its diverse members.

Obi’s defection marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition political landscape, as parties and leaders reposition ahead of the 2027 general election.
