The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to pay tribute to the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. This was followed by a seven-day national mourning period which was earlier announced by President Bola Tinubu.
A statement released on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, says the holiday honors the late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s governance, democracy, and development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, integrity, and a firm commitment to the unity and progress of our beloved country. This public holiday offers all Nigerians a chance to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he stood for,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to use the day to promote peace, unity, patriotism, and national cohesion in line with the late leader’s vision for a united and prosperous nation.
President Tinubu had previously directed that national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which commenced on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The Federal Government had also extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late president, the government and the people of Katsina State, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
