Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades-long ties with the political platform he helped establish.
In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a departure from the party’s founding ideals as the reasons for his exit.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign,” Atiku wrote, expressing dismay at the current direction of the party, which he claims no longer aligns with the principles upon which it was built. “The trajectory the party has taken diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he added.
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, described the decision as painful but necessary. “As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he stated.
Reflecting on his journey within the PDP, Atiku expressed gratitude for the opportunities he was given. “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.”
The former Vice President had contested the presidency on the PDP platform in both 2019 and 2023 but lost to Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu, respectively.
As of the time of filing this report, Atiku has not announced his next political move, leaving the public speculating on whether he will retire from active politics or align with a different political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
