Emir of Gusau, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, Dies at 71 After Prolonged Illness

The Emir of Gusau in Zamfara State, His Royal Highness Dr. Ibrahim Bello, has died at the age of 71 following a prolonged illness. The revered monarch passed away on Friday in Abuja, marking the end of an era for the Gusau Emirate.

Dr. Bello, who became the 16th Emir of Gusau in March 2015 after the passing of his father, was a respected traditional ruler and seasoned civil servant. Before ascending the throne, he had a distinguished career in public service, rising to the rank of Permanent Secretary in both the old Sokoto and Zamfara States.

His death was confirmed by Sulaiman Idris, spokesperson for Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal. In a heartfelt condolence message, the governor described the Emir’s passing as a deeply personal loss.

“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” Governor Lawal said. “His Highness was a supportive royal father and a capable leader who dedicated his life to the progress of Zamfara State.”

The governor extended his condolences to the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the Gusau Emirate, and the Emir’s immediate and extended family. He emphasized the late monarch’s leadership qualities and unwavering commitment to service.

“The late royal father dedicated over 10 years to serving the people of Gusau with faith, dedication, and integrity,” the governor said. “His passing is a tremendous loss not just for Zamfara, but for the entire Northern region and Nigeria at large.”

Describing the Emir as both a father and confidant, the governor prayed for Allah’s mercy and eternal rest for the late monarch. “May the Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus,” he added.

The Gusau Emirate and the people of Zamfara now mourn the loss of a monarch remembered for his humility, service, and steadfast devotion to his people. Plans for funeral rites and royal succession are expected to be announced in the coming days.
