Organised labour in Taraba State, under the banners of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has announced a statewide strike beginning Monday, August 11, 2025.
The strike action follows a resolution passed during a Joint State Administrative Council meeting held on August 6, citing serious concerns over irregularities in the state’s Biometric Data Capture process.
In a joint statement signed by NLC Chairman Peter Jediel and TUC Chairman Sule Abasu, the unions accused the Biometric Data Capture Committee of carrying out illegal practices that have negatively impacted workers. They also condemned the state government’s failure to respond to a previously issued ultimatum.
“Following the mandate of the Joint Administrative Council, the leadership of the NLC and TUC has resolved to take decisive action against the illegality being perpetrated by the Biometric Data Capture Committee,” the statement read.
Key resolutions from the meeting include:
A total strike beginning from the early hours of Monday, August 11, 2025.
Immediate commencement of mobilisation across all sectors.
A public advisory urging citizens, workers, and civil society groups to stock up on essential supplies in preparation for the industrial action.
The unions further directed all affiliate bodies and civil society organisations within the state to establish Strike Implementation Committees in their respective ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure full compliance and efficiency.
The planned strike is expected to significantly disrupt public services across Taraba State unless a last-minute resolution is reached with the state government.
